Yes, it is the end of the year 2016 and TRFW along with all the other non profits is asking you for financial support. TRFW is a 501(c) 3, and your donation is tax deductible. We appreciate any size donation. In a brilliant article by Jonathan Latham, Ph.D , published in Independent Science News (independentsciencenews.org) there is a list worth remembering of why you should give your money, time, and purchasing power to those promoting a locally based, regional food system. We are: Grass Roots, as in from the soil to the table; low budget; local in our work but international in that we’re happening everywhere; and we’re based on a fundamental biological understanding of the world.
Latham points out that “rather than a mere ideology, the food movement is based on pure biology and is therefore in a position to supply what our society lacks: mechanisms to align human needs with the needs of ecosystems and habitats.” And, as the work of TRFW over the years demonstrates, do this in the face of the onslaught of those whose habits and practices wreak destruction of those very biological systems and habitats.
TRFW works with three focus areas:
(1) Protection and Development of our Locally Based Food Lands, both now and for future generations;
(2) programs to Distribute the food produced on these lands in ways that get those foods to local and regional consumers affordably, while being supportive of small farms, and pointed toward a delivery system that can become carbon free and supports renewable energy systems;
(3) and providing everyone with information regarding the highest quality nutrition in our human and animal diets, from a team that includes Doctors, Researchers, Farmers, and citizens concerned about human and animal health.
TRFW relies on individual donations as a base from which to operate our programs that are sometimes supported with grants. That base, used carefully by our board, amounts to about $13,000 per year. We hope that in this season of thanks and giving you will continue to support TRFW as we continue our mostly volunteer-run work in Linn, Benton and Lincoln Counties, that work has a wide-ranging influence across Oregon and beyond.
